USA: Alaska, Talkeetna - Swiss Alaska Inn

Located approximately 118 miles North of Anchorage, in the small town of Talkeetna, the Swiss Alaska Inn is a friendly and warm place to visit. The proprietor, Vern is originally from Switzerland but has been living in Alaska for the past 20 or so years. Both the Inn and the town of Talkeetna, serve as jumping off points for many of the climbers attempting to summit Mt. McKinley, North America's highest peak at 20,320 feet in Denali National Park. The mountain is still over 60 miles away but most climbers fly out to the Kahiltna glacier from Talkeetna's small airport. Visitors can also fly out to see the mountain and surrounding park and if they want land on the glacier for a while. We recommend Doug Geeting Aviation for this trip. Great views of the surrounding mountains are plentiful and the river that runs through town supports a variety of sport fishing ventures.

FACILITIES
There are approximately 24 rooms in the main building and 8-10 in the surrounding cabins. This is not the "Ritz" but it is comfortable and the owners make everyone feel welcome. There is a restaurant in the main building where great home style meals are served. If you get there in May or June you are likely to run in to one or more of the international expeditions of climbers leaving or returning from Mt. McKinley.

PRICES
Room prices run from $80 to $110 per night during the peak season of May through August. MasterCard, Visa accepted.
